Aggressive Driving Accidents in Atlanta

Injured in an accident caused by an overly aggressive driver?

Aggressive driving, sometimes informally referred to as road rage, is the act of making certain decisions and acting certain ways when behind the wheel of a vehicle. Per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), it is defined as "the operation of a motor vehicle in a manner that endangers or is likely to endanger persons or property." This could be anything from speeding to improper lane changing to tailgating the car in front of you out of frustrating for their low speed.

All of these could be classified and fall under the umbrella of "aggressive" driving behaviors. If you have been involved in an accident that was caused by this type of behavior, we encourage you to contact us as soon as possible.

At The Kalka Law Group we are compassionate to the plight of our clients and are committed to helping them in their time of need. We understand what a danger aggressive driving is on the road, and do everything we can to help the victims.

Understanding the Aggressive Driving Behavior

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety suggests that aggressive driving is one of the utmost concerns for people who are on the road, but only for the other driver. In 2005, ABC News and The Washington Post conducted a phone survey; during this, more than 30 percent of respondents stated that aggressive driving was the single most thing to endanger them on the road. This response equaled that of drunk driving and tripled almost any other thing that was given as a response.

Below we have outlined the following as examples of aggressive driving:

  • Tailgating other drivers
  • Weaving in and out of traffic
  • Failure to yield the right of way
  • Preventing other drivers from passing
  • Driving at unsafe speeds
  • Running stop signs or red lights

All of the above can make individuals feel unsafe on the road, and rightfully so. What is interesting, however, is that aggressive driving often falls into a category of "do as I say, not as I do." Where most survey respondents stated that they felt endangered by some of the behaviors listed above, many also admitted to doing the same themselves.

For example, almost half of all respondents admitted that they drove more than 15 mph over the speed limit on the highway in the past month. They also stated that they had sped up to miss a yellow light, honked, pressured other drivers to drive faster, and deliberately ran red lights.

EXCESSIVE SPEED CONTRIBUTES TO CAR ACCIDENTS

When someone is traveling in excess of the posted speed limit, there is the chance that a violent car crash could occur. According to Farmer's Insurance Group, excessive speed plays a part in about 1/3 of all fatal motor vehicle accidents.

Although the information is out there showing motorists that speed is a factor in serious crashes, people still drive fast. In fact, a Farmer's survey indicated that about 69% of drivers have admitted to speeding, 36% admitted to regularly exceeding the posted speed limit by five or more miles per hour, and that 22% admitted to driving 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit repeatedly.

When drivers speed excessively, they:

  • Diminish the time that is needed to avoid an accident
  • Escalate the chance of a crash
  • Increase the severity of the wreck once it happens

Although drivers in Georgia know that speed contributes to accidents and injuries, some motorists still continue to speed excessively, not only endangering their lives but the lives of other innocent motorists.

Penalties for Speeding Drivers

Because excessive speeding is so dangerous, Georgia's "Super Speeder Law," which went into effect on January 1, 2010, fines motorists who drive over 84 mph (74 mph on a two-lane road).

The penalties include expensive fees and four points tacked onto the speeder's driver's license. Speeding is a serious issue, and according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) the impact of a crash doubles every 10 miles per hour over 50 mph.

If you were involved in an accident due to another driver's excessive speeding and reckless behavior, call The Kalka Law Group at (678) 270-2377 immediately.
