Canton, Georgia
The city of Canton is located in Cherokee County, the northwest part of Georgia, about 40 miles outside of the capital, Atlanta. According to the United States Census Bureau, its population is around 23,000, with about 75% reporting to be Caucasian. Initially, Canton was in the middle of Cherokee land, so not many settlers visited. When gold was discovered in Georgia, however, settlers flocked to the river. Federal troops eventually removed the Cherokee who had not moved away to a reservation, after which a permanent courthouse was established. After going through a number of names, the city was left with the name, Canton. This was a result of group of inhabitants who were attempting to replicate the silk industry of Canton, China. Though the silk industry was never hugely successful, the city did become an important manufacturing center.
The history of Canton can be further researched at the Cherokee County Historical Society, which provides housing and literature for all historical items worthy of preservation.
