The Town of Cumming, GA

Cumming is located in Forsyth County, Georgia, about 40 miles northeast of the capital city, Atlanta. It officially has a population of about 5,608, but since it is the county seat of Forsyth, about 100,000 people have a Cumming address. The estimated median household income of Cumming residents is approximately $42,000, with almost 30% of residents below the poverty line, almost doubling the national average. The overwhelming majority of citizens reported their ethnicity to be White, about 76%, the rest are a mixture of Black, American Indian, and Asian.

Cumming was originally occupied by the Cherokee nation, who coexisted with American settlers until the Georgia gold rush. The discovery of gold brought many greedy settlers who wanted the Cherokees out of the area. After an official order stated that the nation must move onto a reservation, Federal Troops came to forcibly remove them from the area, ending in the famed Trail of Tears. The city formed officially in 1834 when a post office was established; it was named after Colonel William Cumming. Though the California gold rush hurt the town of Cumming initially by drawing settlers away, its insignificance allowed it to be spared by Sherman’s March to the Sea during the Civil War, a campaign that devastated much of the area.

In the 20th century, Cumming drew national attention on account of some racial incidents. In 1912, white residents charged some of the black citizens with rape that ignited the town. The state militia was called in to prevent riots, but masked riders launched a reign of terror that forced many of the African American residents to leave. In the late 1980s, a similar incident of racial intolerance occurred during a demonstration for Martin Luther King’s birthday. The local Ku Klux Klan pelted them with stones and broken bottles, inciting national outrage. The media from this event turned out to be one of the largest of the Civil Rights movement.

Crime and Injury Rate

Crime statistics report that Cumming has an overall downward trend of crime. Currently, violent crimes rate are below the national average by 28.51%. Property crime, on the other hand, is above the national average by a huge gap of 112%. There were about 383 total incidents reported in 2010, a rather larger ration for a town of only 5,000. In 2008, about 4,000 vehicular crashes were reported. Of those, 1,208 reported injuries, and 14 were fatalities.
