When drivers are making left-hand turns in the state of Georgia, they are required by law to yield to any oncoming traffic that is in the intersection or so close that they could be considered a hazard. A violation of this law can lead to a car accident, which could potentially cause serious injuries. This is exactly what happened in a case that was recently handled by the Atlanta personal injury lawyers at our law firm, The Kalka Law Group. Fortunately for the accident victim, our firm was able to help him obtain an $85,000 settlement to compensate for his losses after he suffered from a serious neck injury.
The client in this case was a passenger of one of vehicles involved. At the time of the crash, he was in the front passenger seat of a car that was being driven by his son. The accident occurred on Oct. 24, 2012 at an intersection in Gwinnett County. The vehicle our client was in was traveling southbound on Grayson New Hope Road, and the other driver (who was female in her early 20s) was traveling eastbound on Gordie Yancey Drive. After stopping at a stop sign where the two roads meet, the female driver turned left without yielding to oncoming traffic in the intersection. As a result, she ended up turning right in front of the vehicle our client was in, which led to the crash. The female driver ended up receiving a traffic citation due to her failure to yield (a violation of O.C.G.A. §40-6-71).
Because of our client’s injuries, he had to be transported to the hospital via ambulance. It turned out that he had suffered from a cervical vertebrae injury, or an injury to the vertebrae of the spinal cord that are in the neck area. Treatment for the man’s injuries included pain management and physical therapy. Our legal team sought compensation from the appropriate insurance company on behalf of our client, which led to a favorable settlement of $85,000. This compensation will play an important role in covering the costs incurred by of our client’s injury.
